Trade-in car.
You know what’s so special about this car?
This isn’t just any Volvo. This is the Volvo that started it all — the brand’s very first estate, the car that gave birth to the entire idea of the practical, indestructible Swedish wagon. And this particular example? An original Dutch-delivered Duett, just two owners from new, with the last enthusiast having cherished it since 1976. That alone makes it remarkable.
The Volvo Duett was built between 1953 and 1969, and its name says it all: “Duett”, because it had two personalities. During the week, it was a hardworking companion — a tough, dependable utility vehicle with a ladder frame, leaf springs, and ample space for tools or cargo. But come the weekend, it transformed into a charming, comfortable family car, perfect for trips to the beach or scenic countryside drives. Two sides of the same coin — and that dual character is exactly what makes the Duett so special.
This specific example is a P210, the later model that succeeded the PV445 in 1960. How can you tell? By its elegant, curved one-piece windshield, shared with the PV544. It lends the car a slightly more modern look while retaining that unmistakable, old-school Volvo sturdiness. And that sturdiness wasn’t just a marketing slogan — under the hood sits the legendary B18A engine, producing 75 hp but, more importantly, renowned for its bulletproof durability. The B18 was so tough that Volvo used it as the foundation for its rally cars. It’s one of the key reasons old Volvos earned their mythical reputation for being — quite literally — indestructible.
In 2004, this Duett was carefully restored and mechanically overhauled, and today it presents in beautiful condition. The exterior has been refinished in a deep, warm Wine Red, a perfect match for its black vinyl interior. It’s one of those cars that just feels right the moment you see it — honest, well-proportioned, and lovingly maintained. The overall impression is clean, correct, and remarkably well preserved.
The Duett’s construction remains something unique: it rides on a ladder-type chassis — a design that was already becoming old-fashioned in its day, yet it gave Volvo tremendous flexibility to create multiple variants: estate, delivery van, and even chassis for custom coachbuilders. It was the ultimate workhorse Viking, and that’s exactly why it’s so beloved today — by enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone who simply appreciates genuine, no-nonsense engineering.
This example still feels ready for its next adventure — like a loyal dog waiting eagerly by the door, ready for a drive. Exactly how a car should feel.
