The Model

The A6 was a series of “gran turismo”, sports and single-seater cars built by Maserati between 1947 and 1956. "A" stood for Alfieri (the founder member of the Maserati brothers brand) and "6" for the six-cylinder engine. The Gran Turismo A6 1500 was the first road car produced by Maserati. It was commissioned by Adolfo Orsi, who had been the owner of the house of the Trident since 1937 and was the last design developed by the Maserati brothers, particularly involving Ernesto, who had, presumably, already begun development in the years of stasis during the war. The car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1947, with Pinin Farina's coupé bodywork; the production car, had a cleaner and more harmonious line. The car had an immediate success with the press and was met with enthusiasm from the public; the response in sales was not long in coming. The A6 1500 was equipped with a 1.5 liter (1,488 cc), aluminum engine; the basis for both racing and road cars produced by Maserati in the following years. The in-line six-cylinder engine was called A6 TR (“Testa Riportata” for its removable head), it was the fruit of the experience obtained with the long evolution of the pre-war Maserati 6CM unit and was similar to the 2-liter unit of the sport A6 GCS "monofaro". It had a single overhead camshaft and a single Weber carburettor, producing 65 hp at 4,700 rpm. From 1949, some cars were equipped with three carburettors. The tubular chassis (then a novelty for a series car) with side members had front suspension with double swinging arm and on the rear a rigid axle with coil springs. The maximum speed exceeded 150 km/h. The A6 1500 combined performance and luxury, defining the character of Maserati cars of the following years. The Maserati A6 1500 was produced in only 60 units, with chassis numbers from 051 to 0110.

The car

The Maserati A6 1500 Gran Turismo, chassis no. 084, is one of only 60 cars produced. According to the Maserati archive and the testimony of Dr. Adolfo Orsi, the chassis of the car was sent to Pinin Farina for the bodywork on January 28, 1949 and returned to Maserati on June 14. The car was sold new the following year (April 14, 1950) in Milan, by the driver and test driver Franco Cortese, dealer of the house, and registered to Giuseppina Carraretto, wife of commander Gastone Cattapan; there are photos of them at the time with the car. Cattapan was a character closely linked to the history of sports car racing; the year following the purchase of the Maserati in question, he was among those actively involved in the Sant'Ambroeus team (among the founders, Elio Zagato), created to promote the competitions for emerging drivers, aimed at developing and encouraging drivers, especially Italians, towards Formula One. Cattapan, involved in the races, also had the task of giving the signal to start of the Mille Miglia. His son, Gianni, also had a short competition career driving this vehicle, but no official results are known. The Cattapan family saw makeshift showers at the time. Sold in 1957, the Italian life of the car was short, as it was cancelled for export in 1959. The chassis no. 084 spent long years in the USA, where it was also modified and the engine replaced. In 2001, it was purchased by John Bookout who brought together the original car and engine. The car returned to Italy that same year; the correct and matching engine was reassembled in 2003. The car, re-registered, underwent a complete, philological, of the highest level restoration, in 2009. Matching numbers, it is among the most beautiful existing A6 and one of the best known. It ranked 1st of Maserati and 2nd Best of show at the 2012 Concorso di Eleganza Barone Franchetti, while at the Concorso di Eleganza Salvarola Terme it ranked 2nd in class in 2010, 1st in class in 2014 and Best of Maserati in 2019. Maserati flag bearer in recent years, it has been exhibited by the parent company in events world-wide as testimony to the history and spirit of the brand. It was exhibited by Maserati at: Milano Autoclassica 2014 (3rd in the elegance competition among all the cars on display), at the 2016 Motorshow, at the Relais & Chateaux L’Albereta and at Goodwood in 2017 on the occasion of the launch of the new range; in Padua, again in 2017 and at Motor Valley 2019 in the Maserati show room. The car is featured in a video made for the 80th anniversary of the transfer of Maserati from Bologna to Modena. It was also exhibited in the Museo Enzo Ferrari in 2012 and in the Collezione Panini on the occasion of Maserati's 100th anniversary. It participated in the 90th anniversary of Maserati (regularity race) and in the Mille Miglia in the years 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016; at the Gran Premio Nuvolari in 2011 and 2018. The Maserati A6 1500 Gran Turismo, chassis no. 084 is an opportunity to participate in style in major re-enactment events. The car is in spectacular condition. It has ASI and Fiva documents.

L’auto
