This 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint is one of 299 coupes built for the model year and features Superleggera bodywork by Carrozzeria Touring. A Series II example, chassis 01877 was manufactured on August 25, 1954, and was delivered new on February 14, 1955, to Società Commerciale Autoveicoli in Bologna, Italy. It was subsequently imported to the US, where it was later discovered on Long Island in an abandoned state in the 1970s. It was acquired in New Jersey in the late 1970s by North American Alfa Romeo 1900 Registrar Joost Gompels, with whom it remained until the current owner’s purchase in 2014. The aluminum bodywork received a repaint in red during a 1990 refurbishment, while the numbers-matching 1,975cc inline-four was rebuilt in the 1980s. Additional features include a column-shifted five-speed manual transmission, twin Solex carburetors, Borrani alloy wire wheels, finned aluminum drum brakes, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and beige leather interior upholstery. The car has twice (2007, 2017) earned the Alfa Romeo Owner’s Club Certificato d’Oro, for 99/100 concours points. It drove in the 1,700-kilometer tour to AlfaExpo17 in 2017 as well as in a 2018 1,000-kilometer tour of Northern Ontario. This Series II 1900CSS is now offered in Canada with an Alfa Romeo Centro Documentazione information sheet, a maintenance log dating from 1983 to the present, a collection of used and spare parts, owner’s literature, a tool kit, and a current Ontario registration. The last US registration in Georgia is also available. It is unlikely any duty will need to be paid in the USA.

This Touring body is numbered  4278 and was repainted in red during the 1990 refurbishment carried out in Savannah, Georgia, using DuPont finishes with a tinted clearcoat.. Slight imperfections are noted in various areas of the older finish. Additional exterior features include Carello headlights, grille-mounted driving lights, bright “hockey stick” rocker panel accents, and dual exhaust pipes. An uninstalled, unrestored front bumper is included in the sale. The right windshield wiper is not connected to the wiper motor. 

Alloy-rimmed Borrani wire wheels are secured by two-eared knockoffs and wear 165-400 Michelin X tires, as does a trunk-mounted spare. Stopping is handled by finned aluminum drum brakes all around, with duplex actuation and factory cooling scoops up front. The wheel cylinders and brake master cylinder were rebuilt between 2016 and 2017, with the right-rear cylinder again rebuilt in 2020. 


The cabin is trimmed in beige leather with matching upholstery and burgundy accents over the door panels    and rear shelf. Additional features include beige carpeting, black lap belts, leather luggage straps, and a heater, although the latter is not operational. A set of calico floor mats is included in the sale.

The ivory-color steering wheel sits ahead of a body-color dashboard that houses Veglia instrumentation including a 220-km/h speedometer and a 7000 rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer was rebuilt at                76k kilometers (47k miles) and set to zero in 1983. It now shows approximately 10k kilometers (6k miles), 3,500 of which were added by the current owner. The mileage at the time of the odometer rebuild is noted on the speedometer case.

The 1,975cc Tipo 1308 DOHC inline-four features an 8:1 compression ratio and twin Solex carburetors for a factory-rated output of 115 horsepower. The engine was rebuilt in New Jersey in 1983 at 76k kilometers (47k miles), and photographs from the work are shown in the gallery below. Service dating back to 1983 is listed in a maintenance log also shown in the gallery below, with work under the current ownership including refurbishment of the fuel tank in 2014, rebuilds of the carburetors in 2015, a rebuild of the clutch master cylinder in 2017, and replacement of the fuel pump and radiator hoses in 2018. An oil change was performed within the last 500 kilometers.

Engine number AR1308*00954* is stamped on the block, matching the original number listed on the Centro Documentazione specifications sheet.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The suspension comprises an independent front setup, a live-axle rear with coil springs, and telescopic shock absorbers all around.

The Centro Documentazione scheda informativa lists the original component numbers and build and delivery dates, as well as an original color of Grigio Alba. A document regarding the color in the gallery below shows a mysterious discrepancy in factory records, with Rosso listed as the original color but changed to Grigio Azzuro in handwriting dated February 16, 1955. There wasn’t any sign of Grigio Azzuro when the car was stripped for panting.

Italian and English owner’s manuals are included in the sale, as is a tool kit and a collection of used and spare parts. Certificato d’Oro awards won by the car in 2007 and 2017 with scores of 99.8 and 99, respectively. The car was also featured at  the 2018 Canadian International Auto Show in the “Jewels” exhibit. Additional accolades and appearances between 1990 and the present are documented along with the car’s ownership history.
