The late 1960’s and early 1970’s were a fabulous time for Ferrari. Its flagship 365 GTB/4 Daytona was a resounding success and Enzo’s ‘big risk’ the Dino 246 was also selling very well. Ferrari wanted to continue with his tradition of producing high performance ‘Grand Touring’ cars and needed a successor to the 365 GT 2+2 and 365 GTC. He opted to continue with a 2+2 configuration – enter the 365 GTC/4.
The Ferrari 365 GTC/4 was first shown at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show and the unique Pininfarina design took some styling cues from its ‘big brother’, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. It shares the same chassis and engine block from the Daytona but the focus on this car was to ensure it was a comfortable, luxurious, high performance GT car. It had power steering, electric windows and air conditioning as standard.
The model received good reviews in period and 505 cars were built in a short production run from 1971 to 1972. It was succeeded by the wedge shaped 365 GT/4 2+2.
Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4.This particular example is a very rare factory right hand drive example (1 of 31 delivered new to the UK) and it was delivered to the UK market importer Maranello Concessionaires Ltd in March 1972. The original specification was Marrone Colorado 2.443.221 with beige VM3234 hide.
This car has an extensive and comprehensive history file, including correspondence between Mr J Brazier Esq (who ordered the car new) and Maranello Concessionaires Ltd and between Maranello Concessionaires Ltd and the Ferrari factory. The car was first registered in the UK on the 1st April 1972 as UPO2K. Brazier sold the car soon after delivery, in July 1972, through Maranello Concessionaires Ltd to James Downay.
The car was subsequently acquired by Denny & Joan Hulme from Sussex in the UK in 1979 and it was used sparingly in their ownership as confirmed by the MOT’s on file. The registration then was VNF316L. In c1983 the car was sold to Mr K Johnson from Surrey in the UK who also used the car sparingly. There is an invoice on file from November 2001 which is for recommissioning the car after six years of laid up storage. The car was painted red sometime early in its life before being refreshed again late in Johnson’s ownership. There are body restoration photographs on the file.
The car was sold for Johnson by Runnymede Motors from Buckinghamshire in March 2007 to a private Ferrari collector in Australia. There is an import approval on file dated 3 April 2007. Soon after arriving into Australia the mileage is noted as 35,592 miles.
Whilst the car presented and drove well, its owner decided to mechanically refurbish the car. The engine was rebuilt in 2008/2009 at 36,238 miles.
The car was acquired by Oldtimer Australia in November 2013 with the intent of restoring it to a concours standard. It was repainted back to its stunning, original period colour of Marron Colorado by GT Motors in Brisbane, the interior was re-trimmed by Peter Blakemore on the Sunshine Coast, the suspension was refurbished and other mechanical works completed by Marc Jones at Enzotech in Caboolture. The end result was spectacular and the car was taken to a classic Ferrari rally in Victoria in 2014.
The car was going to be kept as part of Mark’s private collection, however, it was sold to its current fastidious owner in mid 2015 and at that time the odometer was at 37,510 miles. In addition to enjoying this fabulous Ferrari out on the open road as its makers intended, he also embarked on a mission to further improve its condition and presentation. The car was given a Platinum Award at the 2017 Ferrari Club Australia QLD Concorso d’Eleganza.
Today the presentation of this car is quite spectacular and it would be hard to find a better example. The paint work is exceptional as is the external trim, chrome, glass and the wheels. Inside the cabin everything is essentially like new. The car is shod with correct Michelin XWX tyres all round. The engine bay also presents as one would expect of a freshly restored car. The 4.4 litre V12 starts easily and it settles quickly into a smooth idle. Be patient . . . warm it up . . . then off you go . . . and “go” it does! This C4 pulls smoothly and strongly through rev range with seemingly unlimited power on tap. The gearbox is tight and the car handles and stops exactly as you would expect. In summary it drives as well as it looks!
