Fourteen years after the end of production of the Lotus Elan +2, the name Elan was revived in August 1989 with the M100 model. This car designed by Lotus man Peter Stevens, two-seater convertible, was this time a front-wheel drive Lotus, coupled to an Isuzu engine and a manual gearbox. The 1588 cc had a double camshaft, sixteen valves and a turbo, good for an output of 132 hp.
More than $55 million was spent on the development of this car, the largest budget in Lotus history, but the design with a plastic body on a tubular steel chassis was true to Lotus founder Colin Chapman's philosophy of delivering performance through a layer of proprietary weight. Thename Elan was linked to its predecessor from the sixties. General Motors had taken over Lotus in 1986 and so this Elan could be developed in three years using an existing Isuzu technology. This also became the only Lotus model with front-wheel drive, all models after the M100 Elan were again equipped with rear-wheel drive.
In 1992, production at Lotus was stopped, but General Motors still had an ace up its sleeve. In 1996 and 1997, Kia Motors built the Elan under license as "Kia Elan" for the local Korean and Japanese market with an 1800 cc 151 hp engine. A total of 1000 units were built and only a few models found their way to Europe!
"Collection by Vermant" has been able to get hold of one of these rare Kia Elan models. It is a German delivered car with first registration on 28/09/2000 with only 17,980 km on the odometer.
The Kia Roadster has the original yellow colour, which was also used by Lotus in its range, and provides a sporty look. The paintwork on the Kia is in very good condition, with no scratches or dents. All Kia emblems are also present on this car, which once again underlines its authenticity. Mechanically the car is in top condition. It is equipped with air conditioning and an original supplied Kia Alpine radio-cassette system! This Roadster comes with Belgian registration and the original owner's manual.
Due to its low weight and powerful engine, the Kia Elan drives very smoothly and sporty. The manual convertible roof, in excellent condition, can be stowed away quickly and quickly to fully enjoy the open driving.
