TRIUMPH TR4

- Just approximately 25% of TR4As were built with a conventional live rear axle, particularly for the American market. The IRS version remained the more technically sophisticated model and is today particularly appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors - Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, a defining figure in automotive design, shaped icons such as the BMW 700, and Ferrari 330 GT - It combines the clean, unmistakably 1960s styling of Michelotti’s TR4 with a significantly improved chassis and independent rear suspension - Characterful four-cylinder engine with twin carburettors - Excellent balance between sporting character and touring comfort - Particularly well suited to historic rallies and touring events The 1960s were a particularly important period in the history of Triumph. Triumph’s reputation had been built largely around its successful TR series. The TR2 and TR3 had established the company as an important manufacturer of affordable British sports cars, particularly in the United States. In 1961 Triumph introduced the TR4, designed by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti. Michelotti’s influence extended well beyond Triumph, with important work for BMW, including the BMW 700, as well as a number of distinctive Ferrari projects created in collaboration with coachbuilders such as Vignale, including the 166 Inter, 212 Inter, 225 S, 250 MM and the Ferrari 330 GT Michelotti Coupé. Its sharper, more modern lines represented a significant departure from the more traditional appearance of the TR3, while the proven 2,138 cc four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel-drive layout retained the mechanical character that TR enthusiasts expected. The most important innovation was the adoption of an Independent Rear Suspension, hence the famous “IRS” badge fitted to the rear of the car. The result was a more sophisticated driving experience, with improved roadholding, greater comfort and better control over uneven surfaces. The TR4A IRS was therefore an interesting combination of two worlds: the traditional British roadster, with its simple four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, combined with a considerably more sophisticated chassis. Just approximately 25% of TR4As were built with a conventional live rear axle, particularly for the American market. The IRS version remained the more technically sophisticated model and is today particularly appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors. ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE This elegant Triumph TR4A IRS is a particularly attractive example, presented in a timeless combination of Signal Red exterior paintwork and a Black interior. Its production details place the car in 1965, the year in which the TR4A was introduced as the evolution of the successful TR4. This example was later registered in the Netherlands, with its Dutch history dating back to 1997, and it is currently registered in the Netherlands. The exterior presents particularly well, with bright paintwork complemented by extensive chrome detailing. The engine bay presents neatly and retains the straightforward mechanical layout for which these cars are appreciated. A polished rocker cover adds a subtle sporting touch, while the visible components and fittings give the compartment an attractive, well-kept appearance. With the hood lowered, the TR4A has a wonderfully clean profile, making it equally suited to relaxed touring, summer driving and participation in classic-car events. CONDITION EXTERIOR The exterior presents in very good overall condition, with the red paintwork giving the car a bright, elegant and attractive appearance. The body retains the crisp, elegant lines of the TR4A, and the panels appear straight and well presented. The chrome bumpers, grille and surrounding brightwork remain in good order and add a strong visual contrast to the red bodywork. Particularly attractive are the chrome wire wheels with traditional knock-off spinners, one of the most desirable visual features on a TR4A and a perfect match for its sporting character. CONDITION INETERIOR The interior presents in very good overall condition, the Black upholstery remains tidy and attractive, with the contrasting white piping still providing a crisp visual accent to the seats and interior trim. The wooden dashboard presents particularly well, with a rich grain and an appealing patina that suits the character of the car. The Jaeger instruments are clear and neatly housed, and the steering wheel, switches and chrome details all contribute to a tidy, well-preserved cockpit. Overall, the cabin gives the impression of a well-maintained classic interior that has been preserved rather than over-restored, combining good presentation with the natural patina expected from a car of this age. DRIVING EXPERIENCE An aspect that makes the TR4A especially appealing is its balance between style, usability and character. The four-cylinder engine suits the character of the car particularly well, offering strong low- and mid-range response and encouraging the driver to make full use of the manual gearbox. Combined with the TR4A’s relatively light construction, the result is a lively and involving car that feels at home on winding country roads. These qualities also make the TR4A an excellent choice for historic rallies and touring events. The IRS specification adds further desirability, making the car more comfortable and composed over longer distances without losing the engaging feel enthusiasts expect from a classic Triumph.
