A correct tool-room copy of the original Prototype Daytona Spyder Rare and desirable Plexiglas model Lovely patina and in excellent condition Following the launch of the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Berlinetta at the Paris Motor show in 1968, there was soon a demand for a Spyder version from Ferrari’s USA importer, Luigi Chinetti. Within a matter of months a prototype was ready for the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show. This unique example (12851) featured the Plexiglas headlight cover and wooden rimmed wheel found only on the early Daytona’s. Our car, just a few chassis numbers away from 12851, is a tool room copy of that car, sharing the same distinctive features, and constructed in exactly the same way as the prototype, with structural reinforcements, front and rear arches and rear bulkhead. Its accuracy owes much to the man who built it, Egidio Brandoli, a former member of Scaglietti’s workshop. This desirable early Plexiglas Daytona 365 GTB/4 originally left the factory in July 1969 and was sold in December that same year by the famous Belgian Ferrari Concessionaire, Garage Francorchamps, to first owner Mr André Gérard. The next owner was a prominent private collector in Switzerland, who had the car converted to Daytona Spyder specification by Egidio Brandoli, of the highly respected Carrozzeria Brandoli in Montale near Modena. It was later bought by the renowned German Ferrari dealer Mario Bernardi as his personal car, in 2003. Since then it has had two more owners, the most recent for nearly a decade. Faithfully converted to the rare and desirable Spyder configuration, by Egidio Brandoli, this particular example was stripped to the chassis and the rebuilt and strengthened using all the correct panels and steel inner front wings and chassis modifications to original Daytona Spyder specification. This is an important distinction as not all Spyder Conversions have been built with this level of accuracy and authenticity. With only 123 original Spyders built, this represents a rare opportunity to own a beautifully executed Daytona conversion, and one that shares its Plexiglas specification with the prototype. Still with its original and softly patinated interior, and in its original colour scheme of Red with Black leather and black hood, this is a very rare and desirable example.
