- A rare and desirable “long door” example, finished in its original Ice Blue over Blackberry trim
- Subject to a comprehensive restoration at marque specialist Hans Kooij, the cost of which far exceeded the current asking price
- It is powered by a 2.0-litre inline-four engine, sending power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with electrically operated overdrive
- A wonderful opportunity to purchase an absolute gem of a TR2 that’s perfect for Mille Miglia or simply enjoying whenever time permits
- Desirable early features that enhance originality and collector appeal as the original aluminium bonnet and body-colour wheels, matching the exterior
- The Triumph TR2 was built between 1953 and 1955 by the Triumph Motor Company in Britain, during which time 8,636 cars were produced
The car used a twin SU carburetor version of the 1991cc four-cylinder Standard Vanguard engine tuned to increase its output to 90 bhp. With the overdrive fitted, the car could reach a maximum speed of 108 mph and return 35 mpg.
The TR2 was launched in 1952 and became very successful in motorsport, winning several races.
A smooth-styled, long-bodied, friendly-looking sports car with low sweeping doors and crucially for an emerging petrolhead culture.
Its sleek, purposeful styling and low, sweeping doors made it particularly attractive to emerging driving enthusiasts. While it was a hit in the UK, the TR2 found its greatest success in the U.S. market, where most of the production was ultimately exported.
Notably, early TR2s were offered in a palette of striking colors such as Ice Blue, Olive Yellow, and Geranium Pink adding to their rarity and collector appeal today.
The Triumph TR2 “long door” refers to the early production model, characterized by its doors extending lower, with the sill line hidden behind them.
This design feature was later changed in later TR2 models due to issues with door damage when opening against curbs.
According to Bill Piggott’s book “Original Triumph TR2/3/3A”, all TR2s and TR3s with standard disc wheels should have them painted to match the bodywork. The “silver lacquar” or “aluminium wheel paint”, did not show up until the start of TR3A production.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This “long door” example, built during the first half of the TR2’s production run, is finished in its factory-correct Ice Blue with a beautifully trimmed Blackberry leather upholstery and wheels painted to match the bodywork.
Early production cars like this example were originally fitted with aluminium bonnets, and in some cases, other panels as well.
These lightweight components were used both to reduce overall weight and to address the limited availability of steel in the post-war period.
As production ramped up, Triumph transitioned to steel panels for reasons of cost and manufacturing efficiency.
Aluminium bodywork is a hallmark of early, original specification and significantly enhances the car’s historical authenticity and collector value.
Having undergone a meticulous, no-expense-spared restoration at marque specialist Hans Kooij the car does not need much explanation for Triumph enthusiasts.
The cost of the restoration far exceeded the current price but the quality is absolutely amazing.
During the restoration, the car was repainted in its original and rare Ice Blue. It remained in the former owners hands for 16 years but due to the fact that he didn’t use the car often he decided to sell the car.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
Panel fit is excellent, and the chrome detailing, including bumpers with overriders and rear stone guards, is in superb condition.
Additional features include a Red soft top with matching side curtains and a tonneau cover, all of which complement the period-correct presentation.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The low-back bucket seats are elegantly upholstered in plush Blackberry Red leather, complemented by matching trim on the dashboard and door panels.
The dashboard remains a highlight, featuring large, bowl-dialed Jaeger instruments that are still in place and fully functional.
All tactile switches and knobs are present and operate correctly.
A classic banjo-style steering wheel sits in front of the Jaeger instrumentation, which includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and centrally mounted auxiliary gauges.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
From the distinctive ‘eyes and mouth’ profile to the car’s front, to the sweeping arches and pronounced boot, the TR2 is arguably one of the most distinctive Triumph cars, with an attractive period appearance that remains incredibly endearing.
A delightful companion for historic rallies like the Mille Miglia, local classic car events, or simply open-top weekend motoring.
The boot affords you good luggage space.
Driving the Triumph TR2 is a truly engaging experience that captures the essence of classic British motoring.
With its light weight, direct steering, and lively engine, the car feels responsive and agile on twisty roads.
The open cockpit and low driving position connect the driver closely to the road, while the mechanical feedback from the gearbox, pedals, and suspension provides a raw and rewarding sense of control.
This TR2 has a lovely worn-in feel to it, is a really hoot to drive, mechanically sorted and ready for summer!
