A BMW whose doors do not open, but disappear. That alone is enough to make the Z1 fascinating. Press a button and the door lowers vertically into the deep sill. Not forward, not upward, and not slightly to the side. Simply down.
This particular example was delivered to its first owner in 1991, and it remained with that same owner until very recently. That alone is something truly special. In addition, this Z1 has covered just 64,000 kilometers and has been carefully preserved throughout its life. The accompanying invoices and original booklets document its history and provide a clear picture of the attention this BMW has received over the years.
The paintwork is original and has never been touched up. That may sound like a minor detail, but for a sports car of this age, it is highly unusual. Many examples have been repainted or even fully restored over the years. Sometimes to an exceptionally high standard, certainly. But a car that still shows, to a large extent, exactly how it left the factory tells an entirely different story.
The body is finished in Top Red, a color that seems almost tailor-made for the Z1. The vivid red suits the compact design, low nose, and broad rear end beautifully. The bodywork is smooth and strikingly modern in appearance, without ever making the car look heavy or overstyled. Place it among other BMWs from the same period and it is immediately obvious that you are looking at something very special.
And then, of course, there are those doors. The Z1 was equipped with a system that allows both doors to retract electrically into the sills. You can even drive with the doors lowered. The result is an open-air driving experience unlike virtually anything offered by another production car. Roof down, doors gone, and suddenly even an ordinary trip to the bakery feels like a small event.
BMW built exactly 8,000 examples of the Z1. The model was far more than simply a new roadster. BMW used it to explore and introduce a variety of ideas relating to design, aerodynamics, body construction, and chassis engineering. The removable plastic body panels were one such example. The flat underbody, unusual structural design, and extraordinary door system also made the Z1 fundamentally different from the familiar BMW models of the period. It was also the first BMW to use the letter Z in its model designation. Models such as the Z3, Z4, and Z8 would, of course, follow later.
Its originality is equally apparent inside. The seats, dashboard, instruments, controls, and overall finish remain in very good condition. The seating position is low and the sills are high. As a result, the cabin feels compact and particularly special, especially when the doors are lowered. Everything is focused on the driver, and all relevant information is positioned exactly where you expect it to be.
Beneath the hood lies BMW’s familiar 2.5-liter inline-six engine. It is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and sends its power to the rear wheels. In other words, exactly the combination you would want in a classic BMW sports car.
The six-cylinder delivers its power smoothly while producing the distinctive sound for which BMW engines of this era are so highly regarded. No exaggerated exhaust note and no artificial effects. Just the calm, mechanical character of an inline-six that becomes increasingly enthusiastic as the revs rise. Meanwhile, the compact dimensions and specially developed suspension provide a direct and rewarding driving experience. The Z1 feels light on its feet, easy to place, and exceptionally engaging.
Today’s example combines precisely the qualities enthusiasts and collectors look for: just 64,000 kilometers, only one owner from new, original factory paint, comprehensive documentation, and a car that remains in its original factory specification.
