The 308 occupies a unique place in Ferrari history. It was never conceived as the fastest or most extravagant model in the range. Smaller than a Berlinetta Boxer, lighter on its feet than the V12 grand tourers and blessed with exceptional visibility, it quickly earned a reputation as one of Ferrari’s most balanced road cars. Even today, many seasoned owners will tell you that a well-sorted 308 remains one of the most enjoyable classics to take on a winding road.

Its cultural significance extends far beyond the motoring world. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, the 308 became the Ferrari that defined an era. Whether gracing magazine covers, adorning bedroom walls or appearing weekly in the immensely popular television series Magnum P.I., the model became synonymous with the romance of Italian sports car ownership. While the Magnum car was, of course, an open-top 308 GTS, it was the unmistakable shape of the 308 family that became instantly recognisable around the world.

This Ferrari was first registered in March 1981 and presents in the wonderfully period combination of Rosso Chiaro over Beige leather. Softer and slightly brighter than the later Rosso Corsa, Rosso Chiaro perfectly suits the elegant lines of the early cars and reflects the colour palette Ferrari offered during the late seventies and early eighties. Inside, the atmosphere remains refreshingly authentic, complemented by a period-correct Alpine 7307 radio that feels entirely at home in the cockpit.

Slide behind the thin-rimmed steering wheel, glance across the simple Veglia instruments and the appeal becomes immediately apparent. There is very little standing between driver and machine. The polished aluminium gate invites every shift, each ratio engaging with the familiar metallic click that has become inseparable from the Ferrari legend. The steering is light once underway, visibility is outstanding and the compact dimensions inspire confidence on roads where many modern performance cars simply feel too large.

The 2.9-litre quad-cam V8 is wonderfully progressive in its delivery, encouraging the driver to explore the upper reaches of the rev range rather than relying on brute force. It is an engine that rewards commitment with sound as much as speed, producing the unmistakable mechanical soundtrack that only a naturally aspirated Ferrari V8 can deliver. The 308 has never been about headline figures. Its enduring appeal lies in the way every control feels connected, every input meaningful and every journey memorable.

Originally delivered to North America, this example has subsequently been sympathetically converted to the cleaner European appearance, allowing Fioravanti’s design at Pininfarina to be appreciated in its purest form. Today the car presents as a particularly elegant example of the model. Prior to delivery, the Ferrari will receive a comprehensive service together with a new set of Michelin TRX tyres.

The Ferrari 308 has long outgrown trends and market fashions. What remains is one of the defining sports cars of its generation: beautifully proportioned, wonderfully mechanical and endlessly satisfying to drive. More than forty years after leaving Maranello, it continues to remind us that genuine driver involvement can never be measured by numbers alone.

Some Ferraris are best appreciated away from the screen. We, Marreyt Classic Cars invite you to discover this 308 GTBi in our new showroom at Ternat, Belgium and experience first-hand what makes the model such an enduring classic.
