1950 Healey Silverstone D-Type

Chassis No. D16 | Registration: LTJ 177

"One of just 105 Healey Silverstones built – a beautifully restored matching numbers motor car with continuous racing history and outstanding provenance."

There are very few British sports cars that capture the spirit of post-war motor racing quite like the Healey Silverstone.

Designed by the legendary Donald Healey and introduced in 1949, the Silverstone was conceived as a competition car for the road. It was built for enthusiastic owners who wanted to drive to a race meeting, compete against the very best of the day and then simply drive home again. Lightweight, purposeful and beautifully engineered, the Silverstone quickly earned an enviable reputation on race circuits, hill climbs and rallies throughout Britain and Europe.

Named after Britain's newest Grand Prix circuit, the Healey Silverstone became the car of choice for amateur racers who wanted a genuinely competitive machine. With its distinctive cutaway doors, flowing wings and low-slung driving position, it remains one of the most iconic British sports cars of the early post-war years.

Production was extremely limited, with just 105 examples leaving the Warwick factory, making the Silverstone one of the rarest and most desirable Healeys ever produced. Today they are highly prized by collectors around the world, not only for their rarity but also for their exceptional driving characteristics and eligibility for many of the world's most prestigious historic motoring events.

Classicmobilia is delighted to offer one of these remarkable cars.

Finished in its original factory colour of Sky Blue, Chassis D16 remains a matching numbers example and is presented today in simply outstanding condition following an exceptional restoration.

First registered on 3rd June 1950 as LTJ 177, the car is accompanied by its original buff logbook, providing a wonderful link to its earliest days.

Unlike many historic sports cars, whose early years have become lost in time, D16's story is exceptionally well documented.

Purchased new by Mr J. W. Goodwin, the Healey was acquired with one purpose in mind—to go motor racing. During his ownership, the Silverstone was campaigned extensively before passing to Mr Kimberley in 1952, who continued to enjoy the car in competition until 1959.

Its next custodian, Mr B. H. Steckler, would become synonymous with the car. Owning D16 for more than forty years, he continued its successful competition career and, seeking even greater performance, fitted a period supercharger to enhance its already spirited performance. The comprehensive history file accompanying the car contains an impressive collection of race reports, photographs, programmes, correspondence and competition records, providing a fascinating insight into its long and active motorsport career.

In 2000, after more than four decades of enthusiastic ownership, Mr Steckler entrusted the Silverstone to its current owner.

Rather than continuing its racing career, the car was carefully preserved and enjoyed exactly as Donald Healey intended—appearing at selected shows and historic events while remaining a wonderfully usable road car.

Recognising the significance of such an original and well-documented example, the owner commissioned a complete nut-and-bolt restoration during 2025 by the internationally renowned Healey specialists Classic Restorations of Milton Keynes. Every component was painstakingly restored or rebuilt, resulting in a Silverstone that today presents as beautifully as the day it first left the Donald Healey factory over seventy-five years ago.

The odometer currently records 86,297 miles, together with approximately 6,000 miles covered since the replacement speedometer was fitted.

Accompanying the car is an exceptional history file including:

  • Original buff logbook
  • Original Healey workshop manual
  • Original Healey sales brochure
  • Extensive ownership history
  • Comprehensive competition records
  • Restoration documentation
  • Historic photographs and correspondence

Perhaps most excitingly, Historic Technical Papers have been applied for and, once completed, the car will be registered with the Mille Miglia Register, making it eligible for entry into the 2027 Mille Miglia Centenary—a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the world's greatest historic road race.

Opportunities to acquire a Healey Silverstone are exceptionally rare. Opportunities to acquire one with continuous documented ownership, genuine period competition history, matching numbers, original colours and a restoration of this calibre are rarer still.

Whether your ambition is to compete in the world's finest historic events, display the car on the concours lawn, or simply enjoy one of Britain's most engaging post-war sports cars on the open road, Chassis D16 represents an outstanding opportunity.

This is far more than just another Healey Silverstone.

It is a beautifully documented piece of British motoring history, restored without compromise and now ready for its next custodian to enjoy for decades to come.
