“When I look back over the sixty-seven or so races in which I drove a Maserati, I remember a few frustrations and many exhilarations. The sort of exhilaration that one gets only from driving a thoroughbred, cars conceived to give battle with the best and pleasure to their drivers.”
Stirling Moss, London, 1975.
The Maserati A6 holds a distinguished place in the brand’s history as the company’s first production road car.
The car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1947, with a Pinin Farina coupé bodywork.
The A6 1500 became a landmark model, not only for Maserati’s mechanical prowess but also for Pinin Farina’s craftsmanship, a perfect marriage of form and function.
They were named “A” for Alfieri Maserati (one of the Maserati brothers, founders of Maserati) and “6” for their straight six-cylinders engine.
Powered by a 1500cc engine derived from Maserati’s pre-war voiturette racing cars, the engine, was a testament to Maserati’s racing heritage and technical prowess.
It provided the car with remarkable agility and responsiveness, while also offering the kind of smooth, controlled performance that elevated the driving experience to new heights.
Recognized for its beauty, precision, and attention to detail, it became a symbol of Maserati’s emerging identity as a producer of high-performance, luxury automobiles.
This model’s success provided the foundation for Maserati’s continued growth, with its design elements such as hidden door handles and the iconic Maserati grille serving as the starting point for many future Maserati road cars.
The A6 1500 is a shining example of how Maserati blended luxury and performance, a theme that would define the brand.
The Maserati A6 1500 was produced in 61 units, with chassis numbers from 051 to 0112: two examples were built in 1946, three in 1947, nine in 1948, twenty-five in 1949 and twenty-two in 1950.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
On November 3rd, 1949, this Maserati A6 1500 was delivered to its first owner, Mr. Remo Berlandi in Bologna.
The car was configured exactly as it appears today, with Pinin Farina’s elegant Berlinetta coachwork and finished in a striking Dark Red color.
In May 1952, the Maserati was sold to Madam Clotilde Martucci, the wife of the Mille Miglia driver Mr. Graziano Spartaco, in Livorno.
Later that year, the Maserati took part in the Mille Miglia, with Mr. Spartaco behind the wheel and Mr. Profuomo as co-driver.
With the car are vintage photos from its racing career, as well as copies of the original Mille Miglia documentation.
The A6 later migrated to Germany in the 1980s before returning to Tuscany in 2008.
It was then acquired by a collector based near Siena, who commissioned a full restoration in the car’s original colors.
Completed in 2011, the restoration is nothing short of stunning.
The work was meticulously carried out by Maserati marque experts, who spared no effort in preserving key original components.
Extremely impressive pictures of very thorough restoration are with the car.
Following the restoration, the car was enthusiastically enjoyed by its former Italian owner and participated in several prestigious events, including the 2012 Mille Miglia, where it performed admirably.
This remarkable car, certified with its FIVA Passport and Mille Miglia Registro, is a proud participant in the Mille Miglia, having competed in the 1952, 2012, 2018, 2023, and 2024 editions.
